CPE / C2 Proficiency
You’ve put in years of work and you’re nearly there — but “nearly” isn’t good enough for an exam that tests exactly the things self-study can’t fix: nuance, register, the instinct for when a phrase is almost right versus genuinely right. Sitting CPE and falling short after all that effort is a particular kind of frustrating, especially when you can’t quite pinpoint why. It’s rarely a knowledge gap at this level — it’s precision, and precision needs a trained eye other than your own.
At C2, the goal shifts from “communicating well” to commanding the language with precision, range, and stylistic control – and the methodology reflects that. We work closely with authentic, high-register materials: literary extracts, opinion journalism, academic writing, natural spoken English at speed – the kind of input that trains your ear and pen for the subtlety CPE actually tests. Exam preparation here is less about basic familiarity with format (most C2 candidates pick that up quickly) and more about precision under scrutiny: use of English tasks that hinge on a single collocation, essays that need genuine rhetorical control, and a Speaking paper that rewards nuance, not just fluency.
Confidence at this level looks different too – it’s less about nerves and more about trusting your instincts in a language that isn’t native to you. Advanced learners often know more than they believe they do, so a large part of our work is calibration: showing you where your instincts are already right, and sharpening the places where they’re slightly off. Because there’s rarely a large volume of “new” grammar to learn at C2, I put real emphasis on learning-to-learn – training you to notice, collect, and internalise new expressions and register shifts from what you read and hear, so your English keeps developing long after we finish working together.
